March Meeting - Automator Actions & Links
24/03/10 10:00
Thank you to everyone who came out Tuesday night! We’ve turned commenting on. So, if you have any comments or feedback, please post away! Thank you again!
Links
Automator / Remote Desktop
Apple Remote Desktop Action Pack - This pack augments the actions included when Remote Desktop is installed.
Apple Remote Desktop Teacher’s Helpers - Remote Desktop can be very useful in the classroom setting. This pack of workflows are for those who just want to “do” and don’t have the technicial expertise or time to learn.
AutomatorBitLy - Great workflow that can be installed as a service. Imagine highlighting ANY url, right-clicking, and automatically shorting the URL. Great for including long links within e-mail!
Project Sikuli
Enabling The Script Menu - This is a great tweak to enable if you’re using Automator, or any other scripting, because it makes the scripts available on demand at the top of your screen at all times.
Notebook/Task Management Software
Circus Ponies Notebook
Toodledo

These workflows require Apple Remote Desktop. You also need to have some computer lists set up within Remote Desktop.
Run Software Updates.workflow - This workflow will prompt you to select a computer list within Remote Desktop, then pass on a Terminal command to go download and install any available updates.
Energy Settings.workflow - This workflow takes your computer’s Energy settings from com.apple.PowerManagement.plist within HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration and will copy the file out to multiple computers based on the list you select.
Deploy Printers.workflow - This workflow will take the print queues you have set up on your machine and deploy those printers out to multiple computers based on the list you select.
Clear Print Queues.workflow - Ever have the urge to just clear all print queues? This workflow will get that job done!
Energy Settings.workflow - Saving Energy is important for everyone these days. This workflow will take your com.apple.AutoWake.plist from HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration and copy the file out to multiple computers based on the list you select.
SpyCam.workflow - This little workflow can be saved as an application and remotely triggered as needed. Comes in handy in educational settings when users are looking an innapropriate content. It will take a screen capture of the desktop and uses the isightcapture CLI to grab a photo of the person sitting in front of the computer. You’ll need to check out the instructions here for installing the isightcapture CLI. Also, make sure to set the path within the workflow to a location where you’ll save the files. The default path is: /Volumes/Macintosh HD/Library/CUSTOMFOLDER/image.jpg.
Auto Login.workflow - Thanks to Jonathan Dickmann from SLUH for getting the coding on this workflow worked out. In order to use this workflow, client machines must be configured to display as ‘name and password’, not ‘list of users’. This workflow will also only function from the login window at its default state with the cursor in the ‘name’ field. You’ll need to customize the workflow with the username and password users will log in as. Once you’ve done that, you can send this workflow out, pick a computer list from Remote Desktop and the machines will log themselves on.

More Automator Services & Project SIKULI
08/02/10 08:53
Our meeting in January was all about Automator, and TUAW just posted an article about five customized Automator services that may help you save a little time. In this article, you can learn how to create services to automatically attach files to a new mail message, print selected files, creating thumbnails, starting Keynote slideshows and shortening an URL automatically w/ Bit.ly.
Another way to “automate” within OS X is Sikuli. This is an interesting project centered visual scripting. If you can see it on your screen, you can make a script for it and automate the task. Check out the demo on YouTube and visit their project site.
Thanks to Gregory (@dotgray) for suggesting this content!

January Meeting - Automator Actions
28/01/10 21:21
As promised, here are the links to some of the Automator actions presented in Tuesday’s meeting. Most of these can be saved as applications, or services.
All of them have been tested with Snow Leopard.
Create Disk Image - This will take files/folders passed into the workflow and create a new disk image file on your desktop. Great for making a quick DMG image backup of a CD/DVD.
iCal Backup Schedule - A very simple backup solution. It’s preset to copy my home folder (“tech”) to an external drive (“EXTERNAL”). This might be something you save into an iCal Alarm workflow and have run automatically on a regular basis.
Manpages to TextEdit - This will prompt you to type in a name of any manual page. Enter a man page, and it will pull up the man page in TextEdit.
Move to Applications - This is a service I’ve set up in Snow Leopard. It provides quick right-click access to moving an application to your Applications folder.
Narration - Just paste some text into the text box, choose your voice settings and hit run. It’ll spit out an audio file on the desktop. This is great for preparing and dumping an audio narration into a Powerpoint or Keynote presentation.
New Event - I use this as a service workflow. Once you have it set up, you can use the Keyboard System Preference to assign a keyboard shortcut to pull it up whenever you need it.
Printing - It could be useful to save this as a service, or an application. Either way, this should help you print documents quickly!
